About

So, its summer 2012 and I am busy marketing cheese! The loveliest cheese in the world actually (I reckon anyway) – Cathedral City. When, one Friday in early August, fate dealt me a couple of exciting cards. I found out I was pregnant with my number 2, and my husband had been offered a promotion (he flogs Colgate), not in his Guildford office, but in Kuala Lumpur. Now, one of these surprises (you can guess which) was pretty much orchestrated and wished for my myself, the other a total wildcard which was never my dream. So, 10 minutes after telling husband there was no way in a million years I was moving to Malaysia, I decided I actually WOULD do it. Well, I’d be pregnant and on maternity leave anyway, so why not make that in a permanently warm place and in a home that would double our (insufficient for 2 children) bedroom count.

And here I am. Pregnant, jobless and mummying in Malaysia. I thought this double adventure might be worth sharing, especially seeing as it wasn’t something I ever thought I’d do. If you read this, please enjoy my journey with me. Whilst I can’t guarantee everything will be thrilling, at least there is one thing guaranteed – there will be a birth. Don’t make me do this alone…………………

  1. Just moved to KL with two kids and another on the way, so glad I stumbled on your blog – very entertaining! 🙂

    • Hi Dawn, thanks so much for reading my blog.. and taking the time to comment. Very much appreciated. Hope you’re enjoying it here. If you need anything or have any q’s don’t hesitate to drop me a line. Best wishes and Happy new year x

  2. Moved to Malaysia in March from the UK with my husband. Both of us have jobs here with the same company. Found out I was pregnant in June with our first (let’s just say we got a bit carried away during our World Cup honeymoon..). Have been fretting ever since (where do you buy baby things like a biggie, why no Pampers, is it too hot for babies?!, ) but your blog has made me feel much better! Any advice on where to meet other expat parents?
I loved your post about first trip back to the UK, never thought I’d appreciate England & Scotland so much until we moved. I miss the weather, including the rain, cold and constant weather chat. I miss the food (simple things like sandwiches and baked potatoes!), and the roads! But Malaysia is an incredible experience, the endless public holidays and celebrations are great.

    • Hi Salma, Welcome to Malaysia! And Congratulations on the new baby! I can help you with any of these things (been there, done that now eh?). Buggies, there is mothercare here – I found that all very familiar as I’d already had a baby in the UK, but there are also lots of nice independent places. Where are you living? We’re in Mont Kiara. If you tell me where you are I can tell you a few places. The pampers thing is odd… must be some Proctor and Gamble thing 😉 I loved Pampers in the UK, out here though it seems that the brand of choice is Mamipoko. I used/use for both of mine and they are great. Whilst its hot, you tend to be in aircon most of the time, and if you’re not, the heat is useful – you don’t have to dress them up in 50 layers of shizzle haha.. I realised how hard it is dress for cold weather when we took them back at Christmas. In terms of expat parents.. there are tonnes of places – but probably best you let me know where you are first. In the first instance, there’s an org called IBU that is really good. Their HQ/house is in Sri Hartamas. They have a pregnancy group so you could probably find some similar bumps! I also co-ordinate the toddler group for the ABWM (association of brit women in Malaysia) if you are on facebook, search for ABWM Young Families and I can add you to the group. Anyway, hope that’s useful. Please don’t worry about anything – coz having a baby here is a good experience and believe me, you won’t be alone. Drop me a line on Jackie.wilson71@gmail.com if you need anything. Best wishes x
